History
In 2004, Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine College was established in alignment with the strategic development plan for Prachinburi Province and the lower central provincial cluster known as “Benjaborapha” The college also aligned with the province’s initiatives in Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, funded by an integrated provincial governor’s budget. Recognizing that Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital possessed over 20 years of experience and expertise in the production and development of herbal products and in the provision of Thai traditional medicine services, the province saw an opportunity to advance these efforts through institutional education.
The hospital had long served as a certified training institution in Thai traditional medicine, a national and international site for study visits related to herbal product development, and an exemplar of integrated Thai traditional medicine services. As a result, the province built Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine College and allocated state-owned land for use by the hospital to manage and operate the institution. The college was envisioned as a center for training, research, herbal product development, and further enhancement of traditional medical services.
In its early years, the college served as a training center for short courses in Thai traditional medicine and a clinical practicum site for students from Ramkhamhaeng University.
In 2005, Burapha University in Chonburi initiated an academic collaboration to co-develop a Bachelor of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine program. From the academic year 2006 onward, the two institutions have jointly offered the program, with Burapha University providing instruction for the first and second years, and Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine College delivering the third and fourth years at its Prachinburi campus.
In 2009, the responsibility for managing the academic program and educational equipment of the Bachelor of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine program was officially transferred from Prachinburi Province to the Praboromarajchanok Institute, under the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health. This change was necessitated by the structural role of hospitals under the Ministry, which do not include the provision of formal education. Educational responsibilities fall under the Praboromarajchanok Institute. The college thus became a satellite campus of Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Chonburi.
In 2013, the Subcommittee on Civil Service approved the organizational structure and staffing framework of Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine College, formally recognizing it as an independent college under the Praboromarajchanok Institute, effective July 12, 2013.
In 2019, the Praboromarajchanok Institute Act designated the Institute as a specialized higher education institution under the Ministry of Public Health. Under the new administrative structure, Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine College in Prachinburi became part of the Faculty of Public Health and Allied Health Sciences.
